select flavor artists
It's not called "Select" for nothing — we've picked seven of the most talented artists and designers we know to participate in the Select Flavor project. In addition to publishing their ubercool creations on Flavorpill, we're posting background information about the artists, getting to the crux of their creative madness via five core interview questions, and archiving their work — all right here.
5 questions with rachel domm
Rachel Domm is totally obsessed with her to-do list. She is forever adding on and crossing off new and old projects, assignments and ideas, and brainstorming new collaborations. Born and bred in the Deep South, Domm eschewed the slow and steady pace of Southern living for Brooklyn, New York, where she received her BFA from Pratt Institute. From Brooklyn, she has contributed to domestic and international publications and has exhibited in New York and LA. Domm is feverishly working to expand her body of work in illustration, prints, books, t-shirts, and various other ephemera.

01. Describe the concept(s) behind your interpretation of Select Flavor.
RD: I wanted to portray an innocent, carefree enjoyment of summer in a decadent, slightly surreal setting. In execution, I wanted to orchestrate interactions of flora and fauna, ice cream and lollipops, and happy girls on a hazy aquatic background — all at play or interacting somehow.
02. Give a brief sketch of the creative process you used to realize your Select artwork.
RD: Observation is always my first step for a long-term project. I gather and absorb information until I am ready to put it onto paper, where it begins as a noncommittal frenzy of sketches and words on 8 1/2 x 11" computer paper with a BiC No. 2 pencil (my way of keeping the initial drawing and ideas from becoming too precious). After much experimentation, the colors and themes finally coalesce and allow for the final additions of decoration and texture.
03. If you could set up a studio anywhere, what location would you choose, and why?
RD: Actually, I recently found my current dream studio, which I share with my friend/collaborator/partner in crime — a big, sunny space within walking distance from my apartment that will soon be equipped with my illustrating, drawing, silkscreening, and computer station(s), alongside my friend's letterpress setup.
04. Who or what inspires you to make art?
RD: I am a hoarder of printed objects. I store any sticker, button, cloth, book, and magazine that creates a twinge of inspiration in me.
05. What other projects are you working on — or dreaming about working on — right now?
RD: I am focusing a lot on my own projects right now, as well as a few collaborations with friends, just taking each new assignment in stride and trying to expand the range of my design vocabulary.
