FLAVORPILL

May 14, 2008

Last week, Flavorpill broke from tradition and ran a few art-stars on our covers. Following the opening of Jeff Koons on the Roof at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we selected a photograph of Balloon Dog (Yellow) and Sacred Heart (Red/Gold) on the cover of NYC 413. For the cover of SF 314, we chose a Ryan McGinley photograph of a nude woman leaping against the open, American plains. Ann (slingshot) is part of McGinley's latest body of work, I Know Where the Summer Goes, on view at Ratio 3 Gallery until June 21, 2008.

This week, we showcase works by Asian artists. Japanese photographer Tomoko Sawada contributes an image from School Days for NYC 414. Sawada's staged self-portraits explore individuality in contemporary Japanese culture and are on display in the current Flavorpill-listed exhibition, Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan. For CHI 191, Shanghai-born mixed-media artist Maleonn provides a fantastical photograph from Days on Cotton Candy, Kasia Kay Art Projects' exhibition in downtown Chicago.

We're always looking for new cover artwork — from individuals, galleries, and collectives — so take a moment to check out our design specs, and spread some flavor.

A Scribble is Worth 1,000 Journals

1,000 Journals is the worldwide art project begun by an anonymous San Francisco artist in 2000. Inspired by scrawled conversations on bathroom walls, the artist gave 100 blank journals to willing participants and asked them to add their thoughts and drawings, then pass them along to another collaborator. The project's success inspired the creator to send another 900 journals into circulation — thus the 1,000 Journals Project was born. Excerpts of the journals can be seen on the website, and the best pages are published in the book, 1,000 Journals Project.

Cover Designs

We encourage you also to express visually what you like about or what's happening in your city — NYC, CHI, LA, SF, MIAMI, or LDN. Or just submit cool designs because they would look great at the top of our mailers.

We're also always looking for good music based covers for Earplug.

Credits & Specs

Flavorpill covers are 440 x 155 pixels, and Earplug covers are 444 x 129. Do something specific for the size, or crop something to make it fit. Either way works.

If we decide to run your design, we'll ask you for a bio, which will link directly from your work.
